Talensi District Health Service
Dr Nana began working with the Talensi District Health Service in 2014, forging a close partnership with its Director, Mrs Evelyn Naaso. Since she retired in 2018, we have been working with her successor, Ms Estella Abazesi. She is an experienced nurse and clinical services manager with a Masters in Public Health degree from the University of Amsterdam. Through the Director, we also collaborate with other staff such as the Information Officer, the Transport Manager and the managers of the health facilities we are working on. The Service provides health care and preventive measures for an estimated 90,000 people, dispersed over a wide area in countless small communities. The 170 nurses and 20 midwives are the mainstay of the organisation, typically having to travel long distances by motorbike to see their patients. There are just two doctors who work in the small district hospital.
Peal Deng is a registered Non-Governmental Organisation founded in 2003 and dedicated to community development in Talensi District. It is directed by Daniel and Hawa Bangrey and based at Tongo Oasis, a community centre they began in 2003, in collaboration with Linda Atwater, an American teacher and artist. They have completed a range of projects including dam-building, forestation, founding and managing a primary school and creating job opportunities for local women. International funders include the World Bank, the UN World Food Programme, USAID, the International Labour Organisation, the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Government of Japan. Dr Nana has been working with Peal Deng since 2014. With his local knowledge, leadership and multi-tasking skills and financial probity, Dan has proved an ideal partner and project manager.
